Opening Reception

Please join the National Museum of Mexican Art and for the opening reception of the new exhibition, Estampas de la Raza: Contemporary Prints from the Romo Collection

This public reception will take place on Friday, March 25 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and is free of charge.

Estampas de la Raza is a comprehensive survey of the contributions of artists of Mexican descent from post-1960 American printmaking. Organized by the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas the exhibition chronicles the late 1960s at the outset of the Chicano Movement to the confident expressions of the 2000s. More than 60 prints by 44 artists reveal the richness of their bicultural heritage in the U.S.

Organized thematically in five sections, the exhibition focuses on aspects of the Mexican experience in the U.S.: the identity of individuals striving to define themselves; the Chicano Movement’s struggle to achieve economic, political, and personal equality; tradition, memory, and culture in the everyday lives of Mexican descendants; icons that represent guideposts or social and political causes; and other voices revealing the complex and ever-changing directions Latinos choose.

Organized by the McNay Art Museum with support from the Elizabeth Huth Coates Charitable Foundation of 1992

Curated by Lyle W. Williams, McNay Curator of Prints and Drawings
