Gunther Gerzso was a painter, designer, and screenwriter. His work is widely considered abstract, with elements of Cubism and surrealism, that include references to Mesoamerican cultures and Mexican landscapes. With Carlos Mérida and Rufino Tamayo, he was labeled one of “Los Nuevos Tres Grandes”. His retrospective was on display at NMMA in 2004, Risking the Abstract: Mexican Modernism and the Art of Gunther Gerzso.
