María Izquierdo was a painter and muralist. She was the first Mexican woman to have a solo exhibition in the U.S. Inspired by her childhood in the countryside, her work often depicted dream-like landscapes and centralized women in her work. Her work was celebrated in the 1996 solo exhibition, María Izquierdo 1902-1955 , organized by NMMA.
