Mayan Backstrap Loom Workshop

August 29 – August 30, 2026 National Museum of Mexican Art

Join us for an immersive two-day experience exploring the art, history, and cultural significance of the traditional Mayan backstrap loom. Guided by master artisan and cultural leader Margarita López, participants will learn the foundations of this ancestral weaving technique while connecting with the stories, creativity, and living heritage behind every thread.

More than a workshop, this is an opportunity to engage with sustainable craftsmanship and experience a tradition that has been preserved and passed down through generations.

Whether you are an artist, designer, textile enthusiast, educator, or simply curious to learn, this workshop welcomes all experience levels. This workshop will be held primarily in Spanish, with staff available to provide English translation.
