Tune into NMMA’s new Youtube series spotlighting live music and DJ talent from around the world, filmed inside the Museum’s captivating walls. This series will feature both local and international artists. Each episode offers a unique style of music giving audiences the opportunity to discover new artists and genres while being immersed in a new museum space. The first NMMA Gallery Sessions premieres on Youtube on Friday, November 15th with DJs La Colocha and Charly Garcia of Sonorama.
La Colocha began collecting and selecting records while living on the US-Mexico border, spinning in bars, parties, and cantinas in the center of Ciudad Juarez. From the sounds of growing up in Queens, NY to her mother’s roots in the Sonidero tradition in Mexico City, experiences weave the sonic tapestry La Colocha emits in each of her sets to move the hearts and bodies of the people who hear her play. Carlos “Charly” Garcia is an audiovisual artist, electronic arts advocate, and cultural organizer. He is also known for his work on independent radio, and his extensive world roots music research as a vinyl collector and music curator. Charly is also a founding member of the Chicago-based DJ collective and record label (((SONORAMA))), focusing on Latin Vintage Sounds from the 1960s and 1970s.
