Reclaiming Our Past

February 2 – April 29, 1996

The exhibition focused on a selection of graphic work chosen from the Permanent Collection for the reason of a common theme of pre-Cuauhtémoc imagery that runs throughout them. The artwork exhibited represented the efforts of nine Mexican and Mexican - American artists who have chosen to carry on the Mexican Renaissance tradition begun in Mexico in the early part of the 20th Century. Rather than looking only to European cultures for inspiration, visual artists and other members of the Mexican intelligentsia reclaimed their indigenous past; a source which continues to be embraced by contemporary artists on both sides of the border.
